Merriam-Webster defines a Rube Goldberg machine as “accomplishing by complex means what seemingly could be done simply.” Kim Bellard uses the descriptive metaphor to point out the “villains” who have led to the overcomplexity of the healthcare system.

“If we had a magic wand, we could remake our healthcare system into something much simpler, much more effective, and much less expensive,” he suggests. “Unfortunately, we not only don’t have such a magic wand, we don’t even agree on what that system should look like. We’ve gotten so used to the complex that we can no longer see the simple.”

Acknowledging his lack of a “Utopian vision of a healthcare system that would solve all the problems of our system,”  he does offer some tips for innovators in healthcare.
